Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised and Impressed Pomegranate Decoration, attributed to Clarkson Crolius, Sr., Manhattan, NY, late 18th or early 19th century, ovoid jug with footed base and heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted pomegranate design with impressed Crolius floral motifs forming the fruits' blossoming ends. Decoration includes splayed leaves with buds, interspersed between the fruit, as well as highly-unusual, incised crosshatching at the center. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One of the most artistic incised works carrying a firm Clarkson Crolius, Sr. attribution that we are aware of. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. Heavy chipping to base. Otherwise excellent condition. H 15 3/4".
