Very Rare and Fine "Morgan / Maker" (William Morgan, Baltimore, MD) Stoneware Jar w/ Slip-Trailed Floral Decoration, 1822-27, ovoid jar with footed base, rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated completely around the shoulder with a slip-trailed vine bearing daisies and leaves. Slip-trailed wavy line decoration over tops of handles and cobalt highlights to the handle terminals. Incised in fine script at shoulder, "Morgan Maker". This jar exhibits outstanding color and features an uncommon, more free-flowing variant of this pottery's classic slip-trailed daisy motif. Furthermore, Morgan's slip-trailed motifs are typically smaller and less elaborate, usually extending from handle to handle, and not completely around the jar's circumference, as seen on this example. The use of wavy cobalt lines above the handles is additionally an unusual treatment. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Maryland. A restored 3 1/2" x 1 1/4" section to rim. A small chip to underside at edge. A large tight, horizontal Y-shaped crack below decoration on reverse. H 9 1/2".
