Very Fine Anna Pottery Stoneware Advertising Pig Flask, Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, circa 1880, molded flask in the form of a reclining pig with hole at rear, incised details to snout and hooves, and anatomically-correct underside. Surface covered in an Albany slip glaze and incised on one side "From / John Gaubatz / No 115 Green Street / With some good old Rye in". Remainder of pig incised with a map of the Midwestern U.S., including the following landmarks: St. Louis the Capital in 1876 or in, Chicago the Corn Crib, Miss River, Grand Tower, Mounds, Cairo, Carbondale, Duquoin, Ashley, Centralia, Odin, Effingham, Mattoon, Tolona, Gillman, Ohio River, and Cincinnati the Porkopolis. The ornate, large-sized penmanship on this example is noteworthy. The inscription, "St. Louis the Capital in 1876 or in" is unusual, as this line typically reads, "St. Louis the future Capital in". Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in the family of the consignor. A chip to the end of each ear. Otherwise excellent condition. L 8 3/8".
