Possibly Unique Miniature Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Butter Crock, Incised "Xerxes Price / Made 1841", Sayreville, NJ, 1841, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder and applied lug handle, incised on one side "Xerxes Price" and on the reverse "Made 1841". Decorated throughout with cobalt slip spots, stripes, and scalloping, along with highlights to the handle terminals. This recently-discovered piece was made when Xerxes Price was 64 years old, just four years before his death, and is believed to be the only surviving example of stoneware bearing this important New Jersey potter's hand-incised signature. One handle missing. Heavy chipping to rim. Cracks and hairlines from rim, two of which extend onto underside. A long, faint horizontal line near base on reverse. Traces of old green and white paint to interior. H 2 3/8" ; Diameter 4 1/4".
