Rare One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Impressed Design, Stamped "WARNE & LETTs 1806 / S.AMBOY.N.JERSEY", Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts, South Amboy, NJ, 1806, highly-ovoid jug with footed base, heavily-tooled spout, and coggled decoration around shoulder, impressed with the large-sized maker's mark, "WARNE & LETTs 1806 / S.AMBOY.N.JERSY", above a scallop-edged crescent. Maker's mark and decoration highlighted in an early-style, blue-greenish slip, possibly composed of cobalt and iron. Additional blue-green slip highlights to handle terminals, including a highly-unusual triangular design at base of handle, reminiscent of a fish tail. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A long Y-shaped crack extending from left side of jug onto base on front of jug. A Y-shaped hairline at base on reverse. A 7/8" chip to underside at edge. A few nicks to base. H 11".
