Extremely Rare Stoneware Oyster Jar, Stamped "BROWN / No. 271 / WATER STREET / N. YORK", attributed to Thomas Commeraw, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, cylindrical jar with recessed canning rim, featuring the large impressed advertising, "BROWN / No 274 / WATER STREET / N. YORK". The oyster jars of Thomas Commeraw are regarded as some of the earliest examples of stoneware advertising made in this country. Examples have been found as far south as Guyana, South America, indicating their use on ships traveling the Atlantic coast. This jar is considered important among the body of surviving Commeraw oyster jars in that it is the only documented example bearing advertising for this particular merchant. Provenance: EX-Crocker Farm, Inc., November 5, 2005, Lot #287. This jar survives in rarely-found, near-mint condition with only minor wear. H 6 1/4".
