Extremely Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "WELLS & RICHARDS / READING", Pennsylvania origin, circa 1845, thin-walled, ovoid pitcher with tooled rim, decorated with a large flowering tulip plant bearing four open-centered blossoms. Collar decorated with alternating upward and downward oriented swags. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with scarce "WELLS & RICHARDS / READING" maker's mark below spout. One of a small number of signed Wells & Richards pitchers known, and the smallest-sized example we have seen. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example. This pitcher survives in remarkable, essentially as-made condition. H 9".
