Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN YOUNG & CO. / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1856-1858, cylindrical jug with rounded spout and applied handle, decorated with a large, slip-trailed flowering plant design featuring spotted leaves and splayed stems, culminating in a circular blossom composed of looping lines. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. This example features strong color with an exceptionally thick cobalt application. The cylindrical form and use of slip-trailing indicate this jug was likely made shortly after this pottery operation began production, circa 1856. The business, which involved John Young and Shem Thomas, would only last until 1858. Examples from this firm are considered rare and desirable. Very nice condition. A shallow flake to lower handle terminal. A recessed in-the-firing spot to shoulder. Two small spout chips. A few in-the-firing chips. A 1 3/4" Y-shaped line to shoulder.
