Extremely Rare Ornately-Formed Tanware Pitcher with Lavish Freehand Fuchsia and Drape Decoration, Greensboro or New Geneva, PA origin, circa 1880, ovoid pitcher with upswept spout and thick arching handle, the surface profusely-decorated with two rows of Albany slip fuchsia vines encompassing the body. Elaborate drape decoration around spout. Heavy Albany slip highlights to top of rim and handle. One of the finest tanware pitchers to come to auction in years, this example features a highly unsual form modeled after finer ceramics of the period, including ironstone and Rockinghamware. It survives as one of the most heavily-decorated examples of Western Pennsylvania tanware we have seen. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market examples, purchased by the consignor twenty or more years ago. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 7 1/2" ; Diameter (at base) 4".
