Outstanding Six-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Alkaline Glaze and Kaolin Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER MAKER," Thomas Chandler, Edgefield, SC, circa 1850, large-sized, bulbous jug with squared spout and ribbed strap handles. Decorated on the front and reverse with two rows of Chandler's classic drape design in kaolin slip, applied over a greenish alkaline-glazed ground. Impressed with "CHANDLER MAKER" mark at shoulder. One of the finest Chandler stoneware jugs to come to auction in many years, this recently-discovered example exhibits the combination of graceful potting and beautiful glaze treatment that makes Edgefield stoneware so desirable. Excellent form, size, and decoration. This jug has wonderful proportions, measuring 19 1/2" tall, approximately 11" wide, and an impressive 42" in circumference. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found at a New England yard sale approximately twenty years ago. Long tight spider crack to shoulder on reverse, descending onto side of jug. Otherwise excellent condition with minor spout wear. Small stone ping to shoulder on reverse. H 19 1/4".
