Outstanding and Very Rare Three-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Incised "Morgan & Amoss/ makers / Pitt Street / Baltimore / 1821," William Morgan and Thomas Amoss, Baltimore, MD, elegantly-potted, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and open loop handles, decorated on both sides with a slip-trailed floral design bearing long scallop-edged blossoms with dotted centers. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Large incised signature of the Baltimore potting firm of Morgan & Amoss on underside, executed in fine script. One of the finest Morgan & Amoss jars to ever come to auction, this example features a highly unusual floral motif (rarely found on this firm's work) as well as exceptional color. It is perhaps the thinnest-walled example of stoneware from Morgan's Pitt Street operation we have seen, indicative of the high level of craftsmanship of this establishment. Provenance: Found decades ago in the northeastern U.S. Small rim and base chips. 3" hairline from rim. Later blue paint to inscription. H 12 3/4".
