Rare Stoneware Inkwell with Scalloped Cobalt Brushwork, Stamped "M. TYLER & CO / ALBANY," New York State origin, circa 1835, cylindrical inkwell, the top surface with tooled border and large recessed opening surrounded by three smaller holes. Unusual scalloped cobalt line decoration around opening, resembling a cloud or flower blossom. Cobalt highlight to top edge and maker's mark. A rare and desirable form by one of Albany's most-well-known potters, known for his iconic incised fish designs. This inkwell is the first Tyler example we have seen with a stylized design on the top. Other examples are more simply decorated with only highlights. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor approximately twenty years ago. Thin crack extending from underside, up wall of inkwell, across section of top, and into recessed opening. Small rim chips. A tiny base chip. A small stone ping to top surface. A short, faint scratch or surface line to top surface. Diameter 4 1/4".
