Rare and Fine One-Gallon Ochre-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Impressed and Coggled Designs, Stamped "T.W. J.L," Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts, South Amboy, NJ, early 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated with an impressed, scalloped drape or leaf design on the front and reverse. Front with "T.W J.L." maker's mark, used by Thomas Warne and his son-in-law, Joshua Letts, at their pottery in South Amboy, NJ, during the very early 19th century. Additional coggled decoration of a column with serrated edge around shoulder. Ochre highlights throughout. The finest example of stoneware we have ever offered bearing this specific New Jersey mark. Provenance: From a small Northeastern U.S. collection assembled during the 1950s-1990s, consigned to this auction. In excellent, essentially as-made condition. Relatively few pieces of South Amboy stoneware from this time period have survived in such outstanding condition. This jar has an in-the-firing star-shaped surface line on the underside, which is not visible on the interior. Part of this line extends 3/4" up base of jar.
