Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid form with applied tubular pouring spout and metal-and-wood bail handle, profusely decorated with a fern-like foliate design flanking the maker's mark, along with a leaf underneath. Base of spout decorated with a cobalt wreath. Reverse decorated with a brushed flower composed of graduated daubs of cobalt. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals, ears, and maker's mark. A striking example of Harrisburg stoneware, with excellent form, decoration, and color. Includes tin covers of unknown age.
