Very Rare Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Hollow-Centered Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid batter pail with applied tubular spout, metal bale handle, and applied clay handle at base on reverse, the front decorated with two bunches of hollow-centered grapes extending from a leafy vine with corkscrewing tendrils. Additional leaf decoration below maker's mark. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. The "hollow-centered" grapes design is a rare variation of the popular Cowden & Wilcox design, with relatively few examples known. The fact that this decoration adorns a desirable batter pail form and exhibits exceptionally strong cobalt makes this vessel a particularly fine example of Harrisburg stoneware. Possibly one of the finest Harrisburg batter pails to come to auction in recent years. Provenance: Recently-discovered on the American West Coast. Tight lines to base and underside. Spout with chipping and three short lines. Some staining. Bail handle missing wooden attachment. H 8 1/4".
