Exceptional Shenandoah Valley Multi-Glazed Redware Wall Pocket, attributed to J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, with coggled edge, footed base, and applied scrolled handle, the front decorated with a hand-modeled and applied bird and floral design. Impressed and incised details to flower blossoms. Incised details to bird's wings and veining of leaves. Surface covered in a colorful streaks of green and brown over a cream-colored ground. Excellent color and rarely-found, near-flawless condition. Few Shenandoah Valley wall pockets have survived with the bird's beak intact, and even fewer in such well-preserved condition overall. The finest Strasburg wall pocket we have ever offered. Provenance: Ex-Collection William E. Wiltshire, III; Private Collection. Literature: Pictured on page 72 of William E. Wiltshire, III's, Folk Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley. Essentially untouched, as-made condition with typical light in-the-firing contact marks to rim and a minuscule base nick on reverse. H 7".
