Extremely Rare Two-Gallon West Virginia Stoneware Jar, Inscribed in Cobalt "Burley & Bennett," Barbour County, WV origin, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with the large brushed cobalt signature "Burley & Bennett", along with a stripe below the rim and a brushed "2" with flourish to the left. According to "The History of Barbour County, West Virginia: From its Earliest Settlement and Exploration to the Present Time (Morgantown, 1899)," "The land...contains a deposit of potter's clay, which was worked for some years by Burley and Bennett on Teter's Creek. (p. 461)". This jar is the only signed example of Burley & Bennett stoneware we have seen. Heavy, shallow chipping to interior of rim. Chips to exterior of rim.
