Extremely Rare Five-Piece Stoneware Presentation Drinking Set, Inscribed "Stark," attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1880, ovoid pitcher with footed base, tooled collar and body, and rounded rim molding, decorated with two brushed cobalt tulips flanking the incised and cobalt-highlighted inscription "Stark.". Collar with additional brushed swag decoration. Set includes four barrel-form mugs with incised and cobalt-highlighted banding, all additionally inscribed "Stark.". An intact presentation pitcher and mug set is virtually unheard-of in 19th century American stoneware. While we have seen numerous Remmey presentation pitchers as well as a few Remmey presentation mug sets, this group is the first we have seen featuring a pitcher with mugs. An outstanding example. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market offering, which descended in the Stark family of Doylestown, PA. Two rim chips and thin horizontal crack through handle to pitcher. All four mugs in excellent, essentially as-made condition. One mug with a glazed-over stone ping to front. Another mug with a minor shallow nick to rim, which occurred in-the-firing. A third mug with a very minor, in-the-firing stone ping to rim. H (of pitcher) 9" ; H (of mugs) each approximately 4 3/4".
