Exceptional Four-Gallon Ovoid Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Cantering Horse Decoration, New York State origin, circa 1840, skillfully-potted, highly ovoid jug with squared spout, decorated with a very large brushed and slip-trailed design of a cantering horse with harness and bells. Solid highlights to mane and tail. A vertical cobalt stripe below the figure suggests the animal may represent a carousel horse. Incised and cobalt-highlighted "4" above decoration. One of the earliest and largest freehand horse decorations known on American stoneware. An outstanding figural design of impressive size and excellent color. Design measures an imposing 12" long. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased approximately twenty years ago. Bubbling to cobalt on one bell, located on horse's chest. Some light, unobtrusive bubbling elsewhere to cobalt. A glazed-over 1 1/4" iron ping on reverse. A few short in-the-firing lines at base on reverse. A shallow chip on interior of spout. H 17".
