Extremely Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Decoration of a Crane on Branch, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1870, tapered jar with recessed shoulder and flared rim, the front decorated with a brushed folk art design of a crane perched on a tree branch. Incised circular detail to bird's eye. Lip on interior of jar's rim allows to jar to hold a lid. Jar includes an Albany-slip-glazed stoneware lid with dark clay ground, possibly original to the piece. A very rare Morgantown figural design, significantly more difficult to find than the popular people motifs from this pottery. This jar is made all the more desirable by its small size and appealing form. Sealed horizontal crack around entire base of jar. A few very small rim chips. A few additional small chips and wear to lip on interior of rim. Chip to knob of lid. A small chip and a few very minor nicks to edge of lid. H (excluding lid) 8 1/4".
