Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Freehand Cobalt Decoration and Stenciled Cross, Stenciled "J.P. PARKER / JANE LEW / WV," circa 1865, cylindrical churn with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled cross surrounded by four stars. Stenciled "3" to left of cross. Body of churn decorated with large stripes of brushed cobalt flanking the stenciled signature of J.P. Parker, the first owner of the Jane Lew Pottery. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found in Ohio. Very nice condition. Some light wear to surface. Wear to handles. An in-the-firing line on interior of rim, only partially visible on exterior, where it is glazed-over. Wear to inner rim where a lid would rest.
