Very Rare Large-Sized Redware Harvest Jug, Signed in Script "Anthony W. Bacher / 1872," probably Mechanicstown (now Thurmont), MD, large-sized, domed form with cylindrical pouring spout, incised wavy line decoration around shoulder, and heavily-ribbed handle. Shoulder deeply-incised with the large signature and date, "Anthony W. Bacher / 1872," in fine script. Surface covered in a streaky lead-and-manganese glaze with speckles throughout. This harvest jug is the first example of Bacher pottery we have seen with an incised signature on the shoulder, which adds to its rarity as well as its decorative appeal. A skillfully-crafted and sculptural example, potted in an impressive large size. The family history and date of this jug suggest it was made while Bacher was active in Mechanicstown (now Thurmont), MD. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which was recently discovered in the consignor's basement in Hagerstown, MD. The consignor's ancestors resided a few blocks from the Lynn Pottery in Mechanicstown, MD. Excellent condition. Wear to end of spout. Small handle chip. Base chips. Some wear to surface. H 12 3/4".
