Possibly Unique One-and-One-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Swag Decoration and Inscription, "From Keesee & Parr / Richmond, Va.," circa 1858-1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and squared rim, the shoulder decorated with bold cobalt swags in the Parr style, with dramatic reverse J-shaped brushstroke at the end. Midsection and base with large brushed cobalt inscription "From / Keesee & Parr / Richmond / Va". This signature refers to the partnership of potter, David Parr, Jr., and auctioneer, Thomas W. Keesee, which spanned the years 1858-1865 in Richmond, VA. The impressed maker's mark "KEESEE & PARR / RICHMOND, VA," is scarce in its own right. However, this jar is the only example we have seen from this potting firm with a signature in cobalt script. Given the rarity and size of the inscription, it is possible the jar was not made as a product to be used, but rather as an advertisement for the pottery and its wares. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in the Richmond, VA area. A tight T-shaped hairline at base, measuring 1 1/2" tall and 5" long at top of "T". This line also continues 5 1/4" onto underside of jar. Some faint tight lines on underside, not visible on interior. An in-the-firing fissure and minor chip on interior rim, visible as a faint 2" hairline on exterior of rim area. Thin 5 1/2" crack from rim, the majority of which is difficult to see.
