Important Miniature Stoneware Churn with Incised Bird and Floral Decorations, New York State origin, circa 1820-1830, semi-ovoid churn with flared collar and applied lug handles, decorated on one side with a large incised bird perched on a leafy branch, highlighted in cobalt slip. Reverse decorated with an elaborate incised floral design with scalloped leaves. Interesting impressed and cobalt-highlighted rosettes along base of collar. Additional single rosette impressed at base of incised floral design. Churn includes original stoneware lid with all-over cobalt highlighting. The butter churn is one of the rarest and most desirable of all miniature stoneware forms. This example is the finest miniature churn we have offered, featuring bold incising on both sides and retaining its original lid. An important recent discovery in New York State stoneware. Provenance: Originally purchased a few years ago at a garage sale in New York State. Sealed 4" inverted T-shaped crack from rim on one side. Reverse with approximately 3 1/4" hairline from rim, with restored 5/8" x 1/2" wedge at rim. Restored chip to one handle. Lid in excellent condition. H 5".
