Very Rare Ovoid Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Coggled Signature, Impressed "PAUL CUSHMAN's:STOE.WARE.FACTORY.1809 / HALF.A.MILE.WESTOFALBANY.GOAL," Albany, NY origin, circa 1809, ovoid jar with rounded foot, heavily-tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated twice around the body with an elaborate coggled signature, which reads "PAUL CUSHMAN's:STOE.WARE.FACTORY.1809 / HALF.A.MILE.WESTOFALBANY.GOAL". Coggled inscription highlighted in brushed cobalt script. This jar features the rare and highly desirable "HALF.A.MILE.WESTOFALBANY GOAL" coggling as well as a rare variation in the impressed words, in which the word "STONE" is misspelled "STOE". Very nice color, particularly for this maker. Minor surface line to shoulder area, which does not extend through to interior and may have occurred during the firing. Y-shaped hairline and surface crazing under one handle. Two base chips. A few minor, possibly in-the-firing surface lines at base, which continue a couple inches onto underside and are not visible on interior. Two rim chips and a base chip. H 9 3/4".
