Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Decoration of a Woman's Profile, New Jersey origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with rounded foot, heavily-tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles. Front and back decorated with an impressed design of a woman's profile, featuring a large eye with eyelashes, long hair, ribbed neck, and X-shaped detail to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to impressed designs and handle terminals. We have sold several unsigned jars of this style with various impressed designs over the past several years. All are New Jersey in origin, and have been attributed in the past to Xerxes Price of South Amboy, or the Morgan / van Wickle / Green Pottery of Old Bridge. This jar is the finest of the group we have ever offered, featuring a visually-appealing design of a woman's profile (the only example we have seen), decorating an unusually small-sized jar. For a jar by the same maker, but with different decoration, see Webster's Decorated Stoneware of North America, page 168. Rarely-found, near mint condition with a small chip above one handle and a glazed-over stone ping near base.
