Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Slender Body Form and Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1850, nicely-potted, large-sized pitcher with narrow body featuring a rounded shoulder and short collar, both accented with pairs of incised lines, the collar and body separated by a thick angular molding. Body of pitcher decorated completely around with twelve tulips extending from a leafy stem. Collar heavily-decorated with brushed cobalt swags and hanging flowers. Spout decorated with vertical cobalt swags. Impressed below spout with B.C. Milburn maker's mark, underscored by an impressed number "2". One of the finest examples of Milburn stoneware to surface in recent years, and a particularly rare form for this desirable Virginia maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from New Jersey. Overall excellent condition with some shallow chipping to base and in-the-firing crazing at bottom edge. H 13 1/4".
