Exceptional Quart-Sized Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration and Inscription, "C.F. Bell / 1857," Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO," semi-ovoid jug with rounded shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied strap handle, decorated with three large brushed cobalt tulips, dashes around the spout, and brushwork to the handle. Base featuring the slip-trailed signature "C.F. Bell. 1857". Shoulder impressed "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO". A handful of finely-made redware and stoneware items were made and signed at the Bell shop in Waynesboro by John Bell's son, Charles Frederick Bell. The outstanding size, excellent decoration, and rare signature, on this example make it one of the finest John Bell stoneware jugs known. It is additionally one of the best examples of Bell family stoneware to surface in recent years. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from Washington State. Excellent condition.
