Exceptionally Rare Four-Handled Diminutive Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral Decoration, New York State origin, circa 1820-1835, approximately one-quart, highly ovoid jug fashioned with four open handles extending from the top of the spout to the shoulder. Decorated on the front and back with two different incised and cobalt-highlighted floral designs. One side features daisy-like blossoms surrounding the handle with smaller petals interspersed and leaves at the base of the handle. The other side features a similarly-style motif, but instead depicting tulips. All four handles are decorated with cobalt dashes at the midsection and terminals. Exceptional form, size, and decoration. This jug is certainly one of the rarest examples of New York State stoneware to surface anywhere recently. The use of four handles is virtually unheard of in American stoneware production. This interesting and visually-appealing attribute, along with the unusually small size and fine incising, make this jug one of the rarest examples of New York State stoneware to surface anywhere in recent years. As-made condition with a small in-the-firing chip to one handle and a salt drip to one side. H 7 1/2".
