Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware People Jar with Molded Handles, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and molded lug handles with raised foliate decoration. Front of jar decorated with an elaborate brushed cobalt design of a woman with apron, holding a bouquet or feathered hat. Figural decoration is flanked by two tall conical trees, and underscored by an additional design of similar trees flanking an oval-shaped tree. Shoulder decorated with a cobalt stripe underscored by a cobalt chain link design, and impressed with the Thompson Pottery six-gallon capacity mark. An unusually large people jar, with strong decoration and desirable Morgantown molded handles. 1" chip to one handle. Small chip to opposite handle. Chipping to interior of rim. A few chips to exterior of rim. 6 3/4" hairline from rim on reverse. H 17".
