Outstanding and Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Decoration of a Horse and Driver, Stamped "OTTMAN BROS & CO. / FT. EDWARD, NY," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large cobalt design of a horse being driven by a man with top hat and whip. Decoration includes yokes around the horse's chest, long reins extending back towards the driver, a saddle on the horse's back and heavy shading to the body of the animal. Figural designs of this size are unusual. The horse on this example spans most of the crock's front, so much so that the driver is added on the side of the crock, under the handle. A particularly fine and well-detailed example of New York State figural stoneware. Provenance: Recently discovered in New York State. Small rim chips. Chip to one handle. 5" inverted Y-shaped line under one handle, partially visible on interior. Stone ping near base on reverse. Some surface crazing to very top of rim. Surface lines on underside at edge, not visible on interior. H 9 1/2".
