Rare Glazed Redware "Faux Stoneware" Jug with Copper Highlights, Stamped "E D LEWIS / BUSHNELLS BASIN," Monroe County, NY, circa 1848-1854, ovoid jug with squared spout and ribbed handle, the surface covered in a whitish lead-based glaze and decorated with copper accents above the maker’s mark and along the handle. This rare glaze treatment was designed to make the jug resemble salt-glazed stoneware. The impressed mark "E D LEWIS / BUSHNELLS BASIN" is impressed at the shoulder, flanked by impressed rosettes, and refers to potter, Elonzo D. Lewis. Lewis had previously worked as a stoneware potter in Rome, NY, and after 1855, worked at a redware pottery across from Alvin Wilcox in West Bloomfield, Ontario County, NY. One of two known marked pieces of Elonzo D. Lewis pottery. Glaze wear to spout and handle. Wear to base. H 12".
