Extremely Rare and Important Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Bank with Elaborate Finial, Dated 1872 and Impressed "CHARLIE," attributed to E. & L.P. Norton, Bennington, VT, ovoid bank with tooled shoulder and tall, telescoping finial with dramatic turnings, the front decorated with the cobalt date 1872 within a wreath. Shoulder decorated with cobalt stripes and star-shaped brushwork. Finial heavily-decorated with cobalt stripes. Impressed "CHARLIE" at the base of the finial, possibly for documented Norton potter, Charles C. Kimball. A bank made by and for Edward Norton and bearing his own name, pictured in Richard Carter Barrett's Bennington Pottery and Porcelain, p. 326, indicates that potters active at the Norton operation were producing banks, sometimes for their own use. Highly decorative and extremely rare form, created at one of the country's most admired and studied potteries. Finial reglued in two places. Chip to right side of finial. Small base nick. Minor wear to slot. H 8 1/2".
