Extremely Rare Quart-Sized Stoneware Jug, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / NEW-YORK," Clarkson Crolius, Jr., Manhattan, NY, circa 1830, finely-thrown and slender jug with ovoid form, a tall and nicely-tooled spout, and applied strap handle. Front decorated with a brushed cobalt drape-and-dot design, often found decorating the shoulders of vessels produced by both Clarkson Crolius, Sr. and Jr. Cobalt highlights to handle on reverse. This exemplary jug is the smallest and finest example of Clarkson Crolius, Jr., stoneware we have offered. Possibly made as a personal drinking vessel. This jug was filled with water to determine its capacity, which is slightly under one quart. Provenance: Surfaced recently in a Southern antiques collection. As-made condition with a small contact mark to spout and handle, and a contact mark to right side near base. H 7 7/8".
