Very Rare Rustic Stoneware Harvest Jug with Applied Snake Decoration, Ohio origin, late 19th century, wheel-thrown domed form with wide and narrow spouts, the surface decorated with four applied snakes slithering across its surface. Snakes decorated with incised scales and facial details. Surface of jug embellished with incised bark. Split handle terminals in the form of tree branches embellished with impressed screw heads. Additional impressed screw heads around large spout. Stamped with a large, four-lined pottery mark at base, which ends in "O.," indicating its Ohio manufacture. Surface covered in a brown Albany slip glaze. Desirable form with outstanding folk art decoration. Lacking handle. Chips to larger spout. Heavy chipping to button-shaped finial. Two short lines in larger spout, which do not extend through to interior of spout. Spidering crack extending up from base. Small chip to neck of snake near base. A few small base chips. H 7 1/2".
