Very Rare Albany Slip Glazed Anna Pottery Pig Bottle, Signed "From / Kirkpatricks / Anna Ills," Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, circa 1880, molded stoneware pig with deeply-incised facial details and hooves, fitted with a spout at rear, the surface embellished with the finely-incised inscription "Latest and most reliable / Railroad and River Guide / With a little good old Bourbon in a hogs--." Incised below these words with the very rare signature "From / Kirkpatricks / Anna Ills" within an oval cartouche. Back of pig, reverse, and underside, heavily-incised with a map of the Midwest, including the following landmarks: St. Louis the future capital in, Miss River, C.A. & St. L.R.R., Bloomington, Springfield, O & M. R. R., Cairo Short line, C. & St. L. R.R., grand Tower, Kaolin, Jonesboro, Cairo the, Mounds, Carbondale, DuQuoin, Odin, I C. R.R., C B i C. R.R., C. & V. R.R., Vincens, Tunnel Hill, Chicago the Corn City, Cincinnati the ancient Porkopolis, and Anna the Jug City. The bottle's large size, elaborate inscriptions, and fine penmanship, indicate it was made early on in the Kirkpatrick brothers' production of pig bottles. The incised signature at the base is most unusual. One of the finest Anna Pottery pigs we have ever offered. Provenance: Fresh-to-the-market from a North Carolina owner. As-made condition with a 1/2" x 3/8" in-the-firing contact mark on one side. Length 8".
