Important and Outstanding Six-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Stamped "D S" and "6," Daniel Seagle, Vale, Lincoln County, NC, circa 1840, rotund jug with ribbed strap handle and highly-rounded shoulder culminating in a tall, heavily-tooled spout. Surface covered in streaky green alkaline glaze. Impressed "D S" along with a six-gallon capacity mark below spout. Bold form and imposing size. An exceptional example of early Southern stoneware. Excellent condition. In-the-firing 3 1/2" thin separation line at base on reverse, which occurred in the firing. Some bits of kiln furniture on underside, which adhered during the firing. Some scratches to surface. H 17 1/2".
