Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Iron Slip Broken Stem Floral Decoration, Edgefield, SC origin, circa 1850, ovoid jar with short flaring rim and large tab handles, slip-trailed on both sides in iron slip with a large multi-petaled flower with leafy stem. Decoration applied over a celadon-colored alkaline glaze. Desirable decoration. In-the-firing, 1 1/2" glazed-over handle chip. 1 1/2" hairline from rim, connecting to a 4 3/4" glaze line at shoulder. The 4 3/4" glaze line remains in the glaze only and does not extend through to interior. 2" thin Y-shaped crack in handle with associated nick. Additional glazed-over chip to end of same handle, and very minor nick to opposite end of handle. 3/4" line from rim, which remains in glaze only and does not extend through to interior. In-the-firing residue at base on one side. Some in-the-firing lines in glaze on interior, which do not extend through to exterior. H 11".
