Outstanding Shenandoah Valley Redware Wall Pocket with Applied Bird and Floral Decorations, attributed to J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, wheel-thrown, vase-like form with flattened back, coggled edge, and applied handle with scrolled ends. Front decorated with an elaborate applied design of a bird with incised wings and tail, situated between two large, heavily-veined leaves and two large flower blossoms embellished with impressed circles. The bird faces a third circular blossom with incised dots on interior. Surface decorated with streaked green and brown glazes over a yellowish slip, and covered in a lead glaze. A highly desirable Shenandoah Valley form, retaining an exceptionally vivid and colorful glazed surface. Professional restoration to tip of beak. Chip to one end of scrolled handle. H 6 1/2".
