Extremely Rare Stoneware "Fashion" Jug with Cobalt Decoration of a Woman, possibly West Virginia origin, third quarter 19th century, ovoid jug decorated in cobalt with a folk art design of a woman with tall hat, heeled shoes, and diagonally-striped dress, the word "fashion" within a speech bubble extending from the woman's mouth. Exceptional decoration. This jug was excavated from a West Virginia dump over twenty years ago. Restored handle. Y-shaped line on front, with some very small spots of touch-up to decoration. Deep 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" loss to underside, along with a second 3" x 3/4" loss to underside. Additional base chips. Damaged spout has been ground down with some small area of paint touch-up to spout. Faint hairline to shoulder. H 12".
