Extremely Rare Half-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher with Unusual Squat Form, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," circa 1835, with rotund body accented with two incised lines, flared collar with pronounced rim molding, and applied strap handle. Decorated along the collar and spout with a series of brushed cobalt hanging leaves. Midsection decorated with a brushed cobalt drape design. Impressed with the highly desirable mark of merchant, Hugh Charles Smith, across the midsection, along with a half-gallon capacity mark. Recently found in a Virginia home. One of a very few signed Smith pitchers of this size known. Wear to surface along spout, rim, and at maker's mark. Chips and wear to molding at base of collar. Shallow chip on left side of spout. A few minor chips on interior of rim. 4 1/2" crack from rim. H 7 1/4".
