Very Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Crock, Stamped "KENNER. DAVIDSON & MILLER / STRASBURG, VA." circa 1880, straight-sided crock with squared rim, decorated with an attractive brushed cobalt swag and hanging clover motif completely around the shoulder area of the crock and curving around the maker's mark. The clover design, unusual for Strasburg stoneware, is a throwback to potter George Henry Davidson's previous employment in Baltimore, where the decoration was very popular. A two-gallon capacity mark is impressed on the rim, and below that the impressive, large-sized maker's mark "KENNER. DAVIDSON & MILLER / STRASBURG VA.," highlighted in cobalt. This short-lived stamp is one of the rarest and most desirable of all Strasburg maker's marks. Near mint condition with a 2" faint vertical line at base, which does not go through to the interior and likely occurred in the firing. H 11 3/4".
