Very Rare Two-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Federal Eagle Decoration, New York State origin, circa 1830-1840, ovoid jug with applied handle, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted eagle with spread wings and patriotic shield across its breast. The eagle holds an olive branch in one talon and an arrow and American flag in the other. The number "2 1/2" is incised above the eagle"s head, also highlighted in cobalt. Incised eagle decorations are some of the most sought after of all American stoneware designs. This example is truly exceptional in the size of the eagle and the area it covers on the front of the jug. Provenance: Ex-Ernie Graff. Drilled lamp hole at base on reverse. Otherwise mint condition. H 15".
