Very Rare Multi-Glazed Redware Ale Mug, Stamped "I. BELL," John Bell, Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840, ovoid mug with flared base and tall, straight collar, decorated with alternating green and brown sponging over a cream-colored ground. Lead-glazed surface. Handle additionally decorated with green and brown sponging. Impressed with early "I. BELL" maker"s mark below rim. Interior glazed with lead and manganese. An outstanding example of early John Bell redware with an exceptional, early-style decoration. Interestingly, this mug"s glaze is similar to the polychrome glaze used by the Bells of Strasburg, VA, approximately fifty years later. Rim chips. Wear to handle. Staining and light wear to surface. 1 1/4" line from rim. H 6".
