Extremely Rare Southern Salt-Glazed Stoneware Face Harvest Jug, probably Tennessee origin, mid 19th century, dome-shaped vessel with applied spout on one side and hand-modelled face with hat on the opposite side. The dark glaze on the face suggests that the man is meant to be an African-American. Face, hat, base of jug, and spout, decorated with a reddish-brown glaze. An extremely rare form in American salt-glazed stoneware. This is the first example of an American harvest jug we have seen with a human face taking the place of a spout. Missing handle. Damage to brim of hat. H 10 3/4".
