124B. Rare and Important Shenandoah Valley Redware Pitcher, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / STRASBURG / Va," circa 1850-80, squat form pitcher with ornately molded handle, covered in bright yellow slip and decorated with daubs of green copper slip. Lead glazed interior and exterior. Impressed with Solomon Bell maker"s mark on collar. Redware pitchers from this period in Strasburg pottery production are considered rare. Highly unusual and attractive glaze coloration. This example is pictured in color in Rice and Stoudt"s The Shenandoah Pottery, Plate IV, catalogue number 1411 (between pages 36 and 37).
