Rare Shenandoah Valley Glazed Redware Cornucopia Wall Pocket, probably S. Bell & Sons, Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, cornucopia form wall pocket with scalloped rim, decorated with applied clay bird and floral decorations. Incised detail to bird and leaves. Flower heads with impressed circle decoration. Surface glazed with lead and decorated with underlying cream-colored slip and splashed manganese and light copper glazes. Unusually-colored clay appears olive in some areas and reddish in others. Two holes punched in flattened back surface while clay was wet to allow for hanging. A highly desirable Shenandoah Valley redware form. A few spots of glaze loss. Light wear to rim. Possible professional repair to tip of bird"s beak. Length 6 1/2".
