Very Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "J.B. PFALTZGRAFF / YORK, PA," circa 1875, ovoid jar with handles, decorated with two large birds perched in opposing branches. The birds face each other, with one painted slightly larger than the other also with a crest and open mouth. A script cobalt "5" next to the maker"s mark indicates the capacity. An exceptional and very large decoration. One of the more ambitiously decorated Pfaltzgraff stoneware jars known. For a similar example in the collection of the York County Historical Society, see "Pfaltzgraff America"s Potter" page 98, figure 23. Professional restoration to sections of rim, top-to-bottom crack on reverse, crack on underside, corner of one handle, and small section on front. None of the restoration involves the decoration, except for some touch-up work done on the bottom of the left bird"s beak. H 13 1/2.
