Scarce Stoneware Jug with Folky Slip-Trailed "Goony Bird" Decoration, Stamped "CORTLAND," attributed to Madison Woodruff, Cortland, NY, circa 1865, decorated with a long-necked bird with crest and wavy line detail to body, standing between a flowering plant and a corkscrewing flourish. One of the more desirable and folky bird decoratios of New York State. Maker's mark highlighted in cobalt. Some flaked spots to front of jug, which does not affect decoration. Handle has crack with sliver-like chip, and a flaked spot. Height 11".
