Very Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Dish with Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO" and Incised "Shank," circa 1860, low, wide vessel with incised foot, decorated around with a cobalt swag design. Impressed with John Bell maker's mark below rim. Incised on underside by itinerant potter "Shank". This potter is known to have worked at the Bell shop in Waynesboro and is usually associated with another potter named Stauffer. All small number of John Bell redware items have surfaced that are incised "Stauffer & Shank". A very rare form and size. The incised signature on the bottom adds to the piece's rarity and significance. Near mint condition with one tiny base chip. Height 2" ; Diameter 4 3/4".
